The City of South San Francisco is committed to sustainability, environmental preservation, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) while retaining a high quality of life and thriving employment and industrial centers. The City has many policies and programs in place to preserve community resources and assets, helping to improve today's environment and focusing on future generations. The City's Climate Action Plan was adopted in 2014 with the purpose of reducing energy usage and GHGs community-wide. The City is also focusing on transit-oriented development proximate to Caltrain, BART, and the ferry terminal. South San Francisco is investing heavily in alternative modes of transportation I order to reduce reliance on the single-occupancy vehicle, including the newly renovated Caltrain Station and pedestrian plaza, which will help improve transit options for employees, residents, and visitors. The City is also investing in Electric Vehicle (EV) with four EV charging stations at the Miller Garage. The City is developing an EV master plan that will increase the public EV charging stations in South San Francisco. Plus the City plans to purchase EV for its fleet. The City is also piloting bike share and has partnered to offer carpool programs, the free South City Shuttle, as well as transportation demand management strategies for commercial and residential development. In 2016, South San Francisco voted to join Peninsula Clean Energy, which gives residents and businesses the option to purchase energy from cleaner and renewable sources. We are also focused on increasing the efficiency of municipal facilities, and have completed several capital programs to upgrade equipment, including installing a high-efficiency turbo blower at the Water Quality Treatment Plant, replacing HVAC systems throughout City facilities, and improving irrigation and infrastructure throughout City parks and civic landscaping areas.
