Did you know that…

  • walking three times around the path at Alta Loma Park is equal to one mile?
  • Terrabay Gymnasium and Magnolia Center have fitness equipment that is accessible to the public?
  • the Parks and Recreation Department offers drop-in classes and activities through the week that include Zumba, yoga, social dancing, table tennis, and more?

The Parks and Recreation Department received grant funding from Kaiser Permanente Northern California Community Benefit Programs in support of the Get Moving South San Francisco! campaign.

Get Moving South San Francisco! is an exciting new program to encourage South San Francisco residents to engage in health and wellness activities by providing scholarships to register for classes, programs, and designated services offered through the Parks and Recreation Department.  Additionally, recipients will receive a free gift and gift certificate for the South San Francisco Farmer’s Market or special luncheons for seniors.

There are no age requirements for who can apply for the scholarship.  Applications will be available to all South San Francisco residents who meet the income qualifications or who provide a “prescription” for increased physical activity.  This program is open to new, current, and past enrollees of recreation programs and activities.

Scholarships will be limited up to $50 per person, per quarter.  Scholarship funds can be requested a maximum of two times per person, per year.  Applicants must pay the difference if the program or activity cost is greater than the scholarship award.  Scholarship awards cannot be combined into one quarter.   The number of scholarships granted per quarter are limited and are available on a first come, first served basis.  The scholarship only applies to eligible programs that encourage physical fitness.

Applications are available beginning August 1, 2019 and applicants will be able to register for programs and activities with the release of the Fall 2019 Activity Guide.  Registration for South San Francisco residents begins on August 12, 2019.  Scholarships must be used by August 31, 2020.  No extensions or refunds will be granted.  Scholarships cannot be transferred, redeemed for cash, or applied towards other services.

Download an application or pick one up at the Municipal Services Building (MSB) located at 33 Arroyo Drive in South San Francisco.  Completed applications must be submitted in person to the MSB and include proof of residency, proof of income qualification, or a “prescription” from a medical provider for increased physical activity.

Participants will be required to complete surveys about the scholarship program.
