The mHealth Server

Inspired by mobile apps like MyHeart Counts, many Stanford faculty are now building apps of their own. In addition to creating an app, a server platform is typically needed to collect the app's data. In response to the need for this server platform, Stanford Medicine has created a HIPAA-compliant platform to support research applications built on smartphones. This resource, designed and built in collaboration with IRT, Research IT and the MyHeart Counts team, is available for faculty who want to do research involving mobile devices.

The mobile health server is designed to be a scalable, multi-tenant platform with APIs for registering participants and saving data.

Mobile apps can also be built to use the REDCap persistence API. Get in touch with us if you are interested in this approach to collecting data from mobile devices.

The Center for Digital Health is a School of Medicine community resource that provides resources and opportunities to further collaboration and advancement of digital health by enabling the community, connecting external opportunities, and leading strategic initiatives. 

Apple Heart Study

The Apple Heart Study app uses data from Apple Watch to identify irregular heart rhythms, including those from potentially serious heart conditions such as atrial fibrillation. Apple is conducting this research study in collaboration with Stanford Medicine to improve the technology used to detect and analyze irregular heart rhythms, like atrial fibrillation - a leading cause of stroke.

MyHeart Counts

MyHeart Counts is a research app designed to study activity and heart health through your phone. It is also one of the largest cardiovascular research trials ever conducted. Stanford University scientists plan to use data gathered from app users to improve methods of preventing and treating heart disease.
