Research IT Consultation Service Frequently Asked Questions

I am brand new to Stanford! How do I contact Research IT?

Step 1: Obtain a SUNet ID

All services offered by Research IT are only available to members of the Stanford Medicine community. That includes both hospitals as well as the School, but because all our software is authenticated using a highly secure electronic authentication mechanism offered by the University (WebAuth), you must have a Stanford University SUNet ID to use our online services such as the Cohort Discovery Tool. If you are not affiliated with Stanford you will need to ask your Stanford collaborator to sponsor your SUNet ID.

Step 2: Contact us

Contact us via our consutation service portal (link). The service portal is essentially like a ticket based help desk system. We will get back to you in a timely manner. Modern research requires a variety of pieces e.g., understanding privacy and compliance, secure software architecture, hosting, data management and analytics. We help you navigate the complexities.

What are the terms of engagement with Research IT?

A small portion of the infrastucture services are subsidized by SoM. If our infrastucture services result in publications, appropriate grant should be cited (more on STARR citations and REDCap citations). Majority of our services are provided to you at cost. We will set up a meeting with you discuss project requirements. If our consulting services result in publications, Research IT team member should be provided appropriate credit. Please visit our Cost and Credits webpage for more details.
