Pediatric Heart Surgery

US News - Stanford Children's Health

Dedicated to tiny hearts

Our world-renowned team of pediatric heart surgeons is dedicated to repairing heart defects in newborns, infants, children and adolescents. It is what we do best, and we do a lot of it. Only five programs in the United States conducted more than 500 pediatric heart surgeries last year; we performed more than 1,000. Our dedicated pediatric cardiac surgeons perform more heart transplants and ventricular assist device (VAD) implantations than any other hospital.

Practice makes perfect

Our surgeons reliably succeed at procedures considered radical and daunting elsewhere, including surgeries for premature or low-birth-weight babies, heart transplants, VAD implants, and highly specialized pulmonary artery reconstruction for patients with Williams syndrome, pulmonary atresia, or major aortopulmonary collaterals.

At weekly all-hands patient conferences, new and evolving cases are examined from every angle by our interdisciplinary team of world authorities. Our 8 pediatric heart surgeons, 42 pediatric cardiologists, 11 pediatric anesthesiologists and 3 pediatric heart-imaging specialists combine their expertise into one focused, dedicated effort to navigate the very best treatment course for each young patient. It is a testament to our worldwide reputation that more than a quarter of all our young patients are referred to us from other regions.

Frank Hanley, MD

My approach is to make children feel as comfortable as possible by explaining to them that this is routine work for us. This is what we do best, so know that you will get through this and your child will be fine.
