MTC’s Lifeline Transportation Program is part of our commitment to ensuring mobility options for all Bay Area residents.
We tap both state and federal funds to provide Lifeline grants for projects that meet mobility and accessibility needs in low-income communities across the Bay Area.
MTC establishes new guidelines for each cycle of Lifeline grants. But the goal is the same: fund community-based transportation projects developed through a collaborative and inclusive process.
Lifeline projects must address transportation gaps or barriers identified in community-based transportation plans or other local planning efforts in low-income neighborhoods
The Bay Area’s nine county congestion management agencies administer the Lifeline Transportation Program.
This includes determining the eligibility of grant proposals and appointing local review teams to evaluate them. CMAs also guide our Community-Based Transportation Planning Program.
We allocated some $190 million for grants to 224 projects during the first three cycles of the Lifeline Transportation Program.
These include:
- Fixed-route bus service
- Transit stop improvements
- Pedestrian and bicycle access improvements
- Transportation services for seniors and children
- Community shuttles
- Auto loan programs
