Clinical Fellowships

Overview

The Department of Pathology at Stanford University Medical Center trains outstanding candidates for academic, private practice and other leadership positions in pathology.

The Pathology Department selects trainees based on their preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, and communication and interpersonal skills.

We offer 14 ACGME-accredited clinical fellowships in: Breast Pathology, Cytopathology, Dermatopathology, Gastrointestinal Pathology, Genitourinary, Gynecologic Pathology, Hematopathology, Medical Microbiology, Molecular Genetic Pathology, Neuropathology, Pediatric Pathology, Renal Pathology, Surgical Pathology, and Transfusion Medicine Pathology.

Stanford Pathology fellows play a central role in the Department’s goal to provide quality service to patients. Clinical duties vary depending on the service being covered. In general, pathology trainees take on graduated responsibility, functioning as liaisons between the clinical teams and the pathology laboratory.

Breast Pathology Fellowship

With the high level of complexity of breast pathology cases and the evolving role of the pathologist as a “diagnostic oncologist,” breast pathology has become a highly desirable area for pathologists to have specialty expertise.

At Stanford we offer a dedicated Breast Pathology Fellowship that will provide in depth training in breast pathology with the goal of becoming a specialist in the field.

The Breast Pathology Fellowship is an ACGME-accredited program.

Clinical Data Science Fellowship

A full-time one-year post-doctoral training fellowship (with possibility of a one-year extension) for PhDs and MDs to bridge the gap between data science and clinical medicine. Fellows will receive full salary support from the program. The focus of the program is to immerse fellows in interdisciplinary research and clinical workflows so they can learn, build and deploy real-world health data solutions. The fellowship will be self-directed and project-based, with top researchers and clinician mentors.

Cytopathology Fellowship

The Cytopathology Fellowship is a one-year training program (10 months cytology, 2 months elective) geared towards developing a high level of expertise in the performance and interpretation of fine needle aspiration biopsies, interpretation of gynecologic and non-gynecologic exfoliative cytology, and application of ancillary techniques such as flow cytometry, molecular diagnostics, cytogenetics and immunocytochemistry.

The Cytopathology Pathology Fellowship is an ACGME-accredited program.

Dermatopathology Fellowship

The Dermatopathology Fellowship at Stanford accepts applications
from qualified candidates.

To be eligible you must be board certified or eligible for certification by the American Boards of Pathology or Dermatology.

The Dermatopathology Fellowship is an ACGME-accredited program.

Gastrointestinal Pathology Fellowship

The ACGME accredited fellowship in gastrointestinal (GI) pathology is designed to offer advanced, focused and intensive diagnostic training in gastrointestinal pathology, including hepatobiliary and pancreas pathology.

The GI Pathology Fellowship is an ACGME-accredited program.

Applying

All Applicants

Stanford participates in the National Residency Matching Program through ERAS only (available at www.aamc.eras). Your application will be considered complete when the following documents have been received:

An application and personal statement
Three to four letters of recommendation, preferably from faculty members who have worked with you in clinical settings. We strongly recommend one or more letters from a pathologist. PhD applicants should request a letter from their thesis advisor.
Dean's letter/Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE)
Official medical school transcripts
Curriculum vitae. (NB: The ERAS formated CV is sufficient)
Official copy of your United States Medical Licensing Examination scores.

(If you are enrolled in an AAMC approved medical school in the U.S. or Canada, we will accept a copy of your school's report of your scores provided it is verified as a true copy by your Registrar and stamped with the School seal.)
Letter from your program director, if you are currently enrolled in a residency program as well as a second letter from a physician who has worked closely with you in your current program
A copy of your ECFMG certificate, Evaluation Status Letter from the Medical Board of California, and ECFMG and Flex/USMLE exam scores, if you are an International Medical Graduate. We will not review your application without these documents.

Although not a requirement, we encourage you to submit a photograph of yourself. Do not worry, it need not be of professional quality.

Canadian Visa Requirements

Graduates of Canadian medical schools will be placed on ECFMG sponsored J-1 visas. They are not required to take the qualifying examinations such as FMGEMS, NBME, and USMLE in order to obtain their visas.

Note: At this time, the government of Canada is restricting approval of physicians wishing to obtain clinical training outside Canada. SHC is unable to obtain a J-1 visa without the consent of the Canadian government.

Non-Canadian Visa Requirements

All trainees in residency and clinical fellowship programs will be placed on ECFMG sponsored J-1 visas.

Stanford Hospital and Clinics (SHC) does not sponsor such trainees for the H-1B visa. ECFMG requires a valid ECFMG certificate obtained by successful completion of their qualifying examinations (VQE, FMGEMS, NBME, or USMLE) coupled with the appropriate English language examination to be eligible for a visa.

Allow 120 working days for ECFMG to process an initial visa.

Financial Details

Salary

Residents and fellows students in the Dept. of Pathology receive financial support and a housing allowance commensurate with the number of years that they are enrolled.

Housing Allowance

All pathology residents and clinical fellows will annually receive a taxable housing allowance in the amount of $10,000 from Department of Pathology funds.

Residents will receive the first part of the pathology housing allowance in their August paychecks and the second part of the pathology housing allowance in their February paychecks.

The amount of $10,000 per year is guaranteed for the first four years of their training at Stanford.

New/first-time residents will receive a one-time $3,000 payment to assist with moving expenses, a one-time $1,000 for cell phone allowance and an annual educational allowance of $2,000.

A taxable housing allowance of $6,000 (paid monthly at $500) per year is also provided.

All these are provided by the Stanford Healthcare Office of Graduate Medical Education.

Health Insurance

Hospital and major medical insurance for each house officer and his or her dependents are provided.

Dental insurance for the house officer and his or her children is provided, with the spouse's dental insurance available at the house officer's expense.

Disability insurance, malpractice insurance, and sick leave benefits are also provided to house staff at Stanford.

Lab coats and their laundry, pagers, and some University privileges are available.

Time Off

House staff are permitted to take up to three weeks of personal time off with pay during each one-year period.

Personal time off must be scheduled in advance with the approval of the Director of the Residency Training Program in each department or division.

Stanford University Medical Center believes that personal time away from the residency program is important to the welfare of House Staff, so unused personal time off does not accumulate from year to year and there is no provision for pay in lieu of time off.

House officers will not accumulate sick leave credit, and no additional compensation will be paid for unused sick leave. They will be granted 20 days of sick leave (4 weeks) per annum, if needed. Salary will continue, offset by state disability or worker's compensation benefits.
