EPA declares burning wood is same as solar and wind energy

Politics Gestern
At the behest of Congress, Scott Pruitt announced a new Environmental Protection Agency policy that treats burning wood, or biomass, as a carbon-neutral energy source. Climate change experts contend that the science isn’t settled and that the policy ignores the greenhouse gases that result from wood burning.

. spotted in central Georgia, announcing EPA policy that burning wood is carbon-neutral. Congress directed EPA to do so, but EPA's science advisers haven't come to a consensus on the issue

It’s been a great day in GA! Big policy announcement on carbon neutrality of forest biomass. Managed forests improve air & water quality, while creating jobs & products that improve our daily lives. This is environmental stewardship in action.

EPA declares burning wood to be a carbon neutral energy source, something scientists have been warning against for the past few years.

This is ridiculously anti-science. Measuring emissions from burning forest biomass is complicated. But calling it all carbon neutral is laughably wrong.

In the eyes of the current administration, burning wood for energy is now just as environmentally friendly as wind and solar power, despite the fact that burning biomass releases greenhouse gases.

"While burning wood immediately releases carbon, it takes decades or even a century for a replacement tree to absorb the same amount of carbon. In the meantime, all that atmospheric carbon will continue to drive climate change."

Burning wood (biomass) for electricity can provide economic and waste management benefits, but it's generally bad to awful for the air and climate. Shunning science, Congress told EPA to treat biomass as carbon neutral. And that's what EPA is going to do.

EPA chief Scott Pruitt's declaration that burning biomass—such as wood—is "carbon neutral" isn't simply rebranding, it could have substantial ramifications for tax subsidies like renewable energy credits funded by taxpayers at the state & federal level

“Scott Pruitt’s scorched-earth approach at the EPA continues unabated...Pruitt is once again rewarding his industry pals," Sami Yassa, senior scientist NRDC. “This will lead to more destruction of our treasured forests and more dangerous carbon pollution.”

"The idea that biomass is carbon neutral is contentious among scientists, who fear that forests, once cleared so their wood can be used for energy, may not grow back as planned." via

The decision is a one-two punch against conservation and climate action, and Pruitt issued the official policy “clarification” in a meeting with Georgia forest industry leaders, who will no doubt benefit from this misinterpretation of science.
