Persons With Disabilities
Parking access with a state-issued placard
Stanford University complies with all state, federal and local laws regarding equal access for persons with disabilities. Individuals with state-issued disability parking placards (from any state) can park in any marked space on campus. This includes:
- Designated blue disabled-access spaces
- Commuter (‘A’, ‘C’, ‘Z’, etc.) and residential permit spaces (‘ES’, ‘EA’, etc.)
- Metered/visitor pay parking spaces, with the exception of:
- Li Ka Shing Center / Beckman lot (L-15): "Pay-by-space-number" is enforced at specific parking spaces.
- Service vehicle spaces*
*Note: If a space has a posted time limitation it still applies to those vehicles displaying disability plates/ placards parking in those spaces.
Parking for persons with a temporary disability
If you have a temporary disability, you may apply for a temporary “Service Vehicle” courtesy permit from Parking & Transportation Services. These permits are NOT VALID IN DISABLED PARKING SPACES. Please provide us with this completed form signed by a licensed medical provider: Medical Certification for Temporary Disabilities. Cart or Temporary Service Vehicle Permit form (PDF, 124 KB).
We can issue only one temporary “Service Vehicle” courtesy permit for up to one week, valid to park in spaces marked “Service Vehicle.” Please note that posted time limitations shall apply in these spaces. If a permit of longer duration is necessary, you'll need to apply to the DMV for a state placard.
DisGo Cart Service
The Office of Accessible Education (OAE) operates a free Disability Golf Cart (DisGo) transportation service, available to all members of the Stanford community with limited mobility, including those in wheelchairs. The on-campus service operates on weekdays (excluding university-observed holidays and breaks) starting the second week of every quarter. Request a ride in advance by using the online request form on the DisGo web page. If you have questions about this service, please call the OAE at 650.723.1066.
Marguerite Shuttle
WHEELCHAIR & MOBILITY ASSISTANCE
All Marguerite shuttles are wheelchair accessible. Please note the driver is responsible for securing passengers.
Some buses are equipped with a kneeling feature that lowers the front end so that the first step is easier to reach. If you have difficulty boarding the bus, ask the driver to lower the front end or deploy the lift or ramp.
The side-facing seats in the front of the bus and/or the first two forward-facing seats are priority seating for seniors or passengers with disabilities. If you need assistance with securing a seat, please ask the driver.
VISUAL IMPAIRMENT ASSISTANCE
When boarding, please notify the driver if assistance is needed in identifying a designated stop. Announcements are made at major stops. A limited amount of Braille/tactile maps of some shuttle routes are available. For more information, please contact the Diversity & Access Office at disability.access@stanford.edu or 650.725.0326.
ANIMALS
Animals are prohibited on Marguerite shuttles, except service animals. The service animal must be under the control of its handler, must be on a leash that does not interfere with other passengers and must be near their owner’s side without blocking aisles.
Stanford is committed to making reasonable modifications to its policies, practices and procedures to ensure full access to its facilities and activities for individuals with disabilities. To make a request for a reasonable modification and/or for questions/concerns, please contact the Diversity & Access Office at disability.access@stanford.edu or 650.725.0326.
