Computational mathematics is at the heart of many engineering and science disciplines and has grown into a strong and exciting interdisciplinary field of research. At Stanford, we've offered MS and PhD degrees in computational mathematics for over 30 years, with ICME offering those degrees since 1994.
We Do Big Math.
In ICME, we conduct groundbreaking research, train and advise our graduate students, provide consulting, and teach over 60 courses in computational mathematics and scientific computing at both the undergraduate and graduate level to the Stanford community. ICME has a holistic approach to providing graduate students the course work, research opportunities, support, and professional development to better prepare them for their careers in scientific computing. The Institute is a home at Stanford for an increasingly critical multidisciplinary field that uses advanced mathematical and computing capabilities to understand and solve big, complex problems.
Research & PhD Program
Our PhD students from across the globe are advised by more than 50 faculty from 20-plus departments, covering a wide variety of fields including statistics and data science, machine and deep learning, control, optimization, numerical analysis, applied mathematics, high-performance computing, earth sciences, flow physics, graphics, bioengineering, genomics, economics and financial mathematics, molecular dynamics, and many more. PhD graduates find outstanding positions in industry, at national laboratories, and in academia.
Master's Program
Our two-year MS degree provides a solid introduction to computational mathematics and computing and offers students opportunities to earn practical experience through capstone coursework, summer internships, and project-based curriculum. In addition to our MS degree in Computational and Mathematical Engineering, we offer several MS degree tracks: Computational Geosciences, Data Science, Imaging Sciences, and Mathematical and Computational Finance. ICME MS graduates find positions in industry or continue with a PhD in ICME or disciplinary programs.
