Paying for Graduate School

Within Your Reach

Don’t let financial considerations stop you from considering a doctorate degree.

While master’s programs tend to have limited funding, many doctorate programs, including those at Stanford, provide four to five years of tuition and a stipend to cover living expenses. Contact departments of interest to you to ask about standard financial packages.

External Fellowships

Apply for external fellowships as these make you a more attractive applicant and can be used to fund tuition, research, living, and other expenses. Federal and government agencies, private foundations, corporations, and professional organizations offer awards for graduate study. Search through fellowship lists at UC Berkeley and Columbia University.

Application Fee Waivers

Stanford offers Graduate Application Fee Waivers to encourage applicants from all economic backgrounds. If you are from an underrepresented background, received undergraduate financial aid, or participated in undergraduate diversity research programs, you may be eligible.
