The Stanford Society of Physician Scholars
2017-18 SSPS Grant
The Stanford Society of Physician Scholars Grant is designed to support a physician scholar, working in collaboration with a Stanford medical student on a research project. Our hope is that the scholarly work supported by these awards will stimulate meaningful research experiences, foster mentoring relationships, and form the basis for subsequent external funding options.
Eligibility Criteria
- The applicant must be a Stanford resident or fellow until June 2019.
- The applicant does not need to be a member of the Stanford Society of Physician Scholars. SSPS did not have recruitment for new membership this academic year; therefore, our grant is open to all residents and fellows who will complete the 2018-19 academic year at Stanford.
- The applicant must be working with a Stanford medical student who will be considered a co-investigator in the scholarly project.
- Applications are limited to one per resident or fellow.
Funding
Awards are limited to $5,000 per application. Funds cannot be used to support salary. Awardees will have until June 28, 2019 to use their SSPS funding.
Application Process
The grant application includes the following components:
- Description of the proposed project that includes the title, abstract, aims, background, methods, expected results, potential impact, and project timeline
- Summary of the medical student’s role
- Detailed budget with a brief justification
- Letter of support from the physician scholar’s Department Chair
- Letter of support from the physician scholar’s Sponsoring Faculty Member (Principal Investigator)
- Curriculum vitae for the physician scholar
- Curriculum vitae for the medical student
All components of the application must be submitted via Qualtrics by February 28, 2018. Please do not email your application to sspsadmin.
Resources for Identifying Medical Student Co-investigators
The following resources are available to help with identifying medical students co-investigators. Many physician scholars find a co-investigator through introductions from faculty/mentors or by reaching out to individual students themselves.

This resource is provided by the School of Medicine Scholarly Concentration Program. The projects listed are from faculty who wish to have a MedScholars student join their research. In some cases, there may already be a medical student who is involved in the project.
2. Medical Student Mailing Lists
If you already have a project in mind, please fill out our web form and we will send your project posting to the medical student mailing list. Every Friday, we compile new postings that we have received that week and send them out the following Monday.
Progress Report & SSPS Symposium
Grant recipients are required to submit a final report within 18 months of funding. This report should include a summary of the work performed and any presentations or publications arising from the work. At the conclusion of their funding, Grant recipients are also required to present their scholarly projects at a symposium hosted by the Stanford Society of Physician Scholars (more details about the SSPS Symposium will be available at a later time).
Publications
Publications that result from the use of this award should include the following acknowledgment:
“This research was supported by the Office of the Dean, Stanford School of Medicine, through a grant from the Stanford Society of Physician Scholars.”

[About SSPS]
The Stanford Society of Physician Scholars (SSPS) was created by the Office of the Dean in 2010 to support the academic development of residents and fellows from clinical departments across the School of Medicine. SSPS aims to create opportunities that connect trainees to the broader Stanford Medicine community and facilitate their pathway from residency and fellowship to academic careers. Since 2011, SSPS has been offering grants to encourage collaborations between physician scholars and medical students on a diverse range of scholarly projects. Through this collaboration, students can benefit from the guidance of near peers and physician scholars can enhance the development of their research and mentoring skills.
