Our interdisciplinary team includes clinical and research faculty with expertise in implementation science, health economics, bioinformatics, and quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methodologies.

Surgical Outcomes Twitter Journal Club (#SOCJC)
The Surgical Outcomes Club is a consortium of surgeons and scientists interested in Health Services and Outcomes Research in Surgery. Journal Clubs are organized around a defined theme and historically have been in person, with a focus on: Once a quarter, a Surgical Outcomes Club Board member will moderate a journal club along with a guest host (author of one of the articles), providing an opportunity for you to use social media to discuss the topic, explore collaborations, support, mentorship and promote evidence-based practice. The topic and related articles will be announced 2 weeks ahead of the Tweet Chats that will take place on the 4th Monday and Tuesday of that month at 5 pm Pacific/8 pm Eastern. These Tweet chats are open to the public, allow authors to discus their results with a diverse audience, and increase awareness of topics of importance in the world of Health Services Research. The ultimate goal is to advance science. Please join in on the conversation! |

2018 SSAT/SBAS Resident or Fellow Research Award
Congratulations Dr. Miquell Olivia Miller
Project Title: "Physician Cultural Competency in the Coordinated Care of Rectal Cancer Patients".
The Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT) and Society of Black Academic Surgeons (SBAS) Research Committee has selected Dr. Miller as the recipient of the 2018 SSAT/SBAS Resident or Fellow Research Award for her proposal. The research award is $25,000 per year for one to two years.
Principal Investigator include: Dr. Cindy Kin, Assistant Professor of Surgery, Stanford University. Co-Principal Investigator, Dr. Arden Morris, S-SPIRE Director and Vice-Chair of Clinical Research, Stanford University
2017 Intermountain Grant Recipient

Project Title: "Setting A Foundation For Collaborative Surgical Health Services Reseach".
In 2016, Stanford University and Intermountain Healthcare began collaborating on joint clinical, research and education projects. Intermountain Healthcare is a not-for-profit health system based in Utah. The one-year seed grants of up to $75,000 are being awarded to projects jointly led by PIs form Stanford and Intermountain.

The Stanford Women and Sex Differences in Medicine (WSDM) Center has selected Dr. Sabine Girod, to receive a WSDM Seed Grant.
Co-principal investigators include: Dr. Arden Morris, Professor of Surgery; Dr. Cindy Kin, Assistant Professor of Surgery; Dr. Loretta Chou, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery; and Dr. Debra Safer, Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

Dr. Sylvia Bereknyei Merrell
Sylvia Bereknyei Merrell, DrPH, MS
Dr. Merrell is a Research Scholar specializing in qualitative and mixed methods research. She has over 13 years experience in high-level support of research projects at Stanford, including research design, implementation and dissemination, specifically, qualitative and mixed methods research. She has significant content expertise in the following research areas: patient-physician communication, intraoperative team communication, and language barriers. Dr. Merrell also works closely with educators to design and implement medical education curricula and research across the learning spectrum. Additional interests include capacity building in research methodology for medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty.
