Renee Fleming
The evening before her performance at Bing, Renee Fleming spoke about the connections between music, health, and neuroscience in a presentation with Dean Lloyd Minor, and Dr. Josef Parvizi, Professor of Neurology at Stanford Medical School, who, along with Dr. Chris Jaffe, developed the Brain Stethoscope, and Dr. Charles Limb, Chief of Otology, Neurotology, and Skull Base Surgery at UCSF (and former student of Dean Minor’s). The presentation, sponsored by the Medicine and the Muse program and Stanford Live, was inspired by the Sound Health initiative, which Fleming spearheaded with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the National Institutes of Health, in association with the National Endowment for the Arts. For that initiative, Fleming agreed to be in an fMRI for two hours while she sang opera and spoke, allowing researchers to record the difference in brain activity. At the presentation, Fleming sang while an image of her brain with active regions highlighted rotated in the background.

'Music and the Brain' is an event that attempts to raise awareness of the effects of music on the brain. It will include talks on music, neuroscience, and health. You'll hear talks from speakers including Blair Kaneshiro, who has worked at Shazam, and Audrey Shafer, a member of Medicine and the Muse. Come watch performances from Everday People, Spicmacay, Counterpoint, and more! You can also check out our newest album, Resonance, at this symposium, featuring artists from all around campus. Albums will be sold for 10 dollars each, and all proceeds will go towards a national nursing home network. FREE ENTRY and LUNCH PROVIDED!

The next event in the Music and the Brain series will take place on May 14th at CCRMA. The day long symposium on Music Information Retrieval and Data Science, will take a broad view of data analysis in music cognition and theory research.
