Pediatric Cardiac Surgery & Research Fellowships

Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Fellowships

The Division of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery has an ACGME-accredited fellowship program in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery. It is one of 12 ACGME-approved programs in the United States.

Stanford fellows will train in an internationally renowned program with a long-standing commitment to quality training. The program performs 450 major congenital heart surgeries per year.

Stanford is the world leader in the unifocalization procedure to treat pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect and major aortopulmonary collateral arteries (PA/VSD/MAPCAs). Trainees will learn from the surgery’s pioneer, Dr. Frank Hanley. We see roughly 70 of these cases per year.

Stanford is also noted for several other complex congenital cardiac surgical repairs, including Ebstein's anomaly of the tricuspid valve and Left Ventricular Retraining and Late Arterial Switch for D- and L- transposition. We also recently published the largest single institutional experience of Anomalous Aortic Origin of a Coronary Artery.

The fellowship prepares candidates for a career in congenital cardiac surgery and confers eligibility for the Pediatric Cardiac Surgery boards.

How to Apply

Individuals who are currently enrolled in an accredited training program in cardiothoracic surgery and are interested in additional training in pediatric cardiac surgery are eligible to apply.

The Thoracic Surgery Directors Association handles the application process for the 12 national programs. See the TSDA website for more information.

Pediatric Cardiac Research Fellowships

Laboratory research opportunities emphasize objective inquiry of pediatric cardiac surgical practices such as cardiopulmonary bypass, circulatory arrest, cerebral perfusion, mechanical support, and fetal cardiac surgery using animal models. Basic science opportunities include programs investigating the fundamental aspects of heart valve tissue engineering supported by the Alex Vibber Endowment.
