A Rigorous 2-week Program in Health Technology

Are you a high school or college student with a passion for health care and curiosity about the field of anesthesia, health care technology, science-related careers or medical education?

Our two-week summer program (Session I: June 18 - 29, 2018 and Session II: July 30 - August 10, 2018) is designed for high school and pre-medical undergraduate students interested in pursuing careers in medicine, STEM, medical research and development, or health care design, with a specific focus on medicine, Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine. This year we are able to offer a limited block of housing for students who enroll in Session II dates (see housing below).

Led by Stanford Faculty & Staff

This summer program will provide clinical observation opportunities, hands-on experience with anesthesia skills, and mentorship from Stanford medical students and faculty to foster career development in the health professions.

Interact with attending physicians, residents, medical students and medical school admissions officers from Stanford University.

Choose from a range of internship tracks and mentored capstone projects: Clinical, Medical Education, or Research.

Our basic life support (BLS) course trains participants to promptly recognize several life-threatening emergencies, give high-quality chest compressions, deliver appropriate ventilations and provide early use of an AED. Earn your certificate in BLS through the Stanford STM Program!

Capstone projects are an opportunity for students in the Science, Technology and Medicine program to work with Stanford faculty in the School of Medicine on a scholarly project. The opportunity allows them to utilize critical thinking, research skills and creative problem solving to inspire their interest in a career in science or medicine.

The capstone videos above were produced by our students during their two-week summer program experience at Stanford. Working under the mentorship of our program faculty, Dr. Larry Chu, students researched medical topics and produced these videos to share their knowledge on a variety of medical topics with the greater public.

The Science, Technology and Medicine program offers the capstone project as an optional opportunity. *An additional research and lab fee may be required for capstone projects.

Iaisha Sadat wins National Ashoka Youth Challenge

Iaisha Sadat, a 20 year old Santa Clara University student and 2017 graduate of the Stanford Science, Technology and Medicine summer program was recently selected as one of only 25 students from around the United States to participate in the Ashoka Youth Challenge at this year's Stanford University Medicine X conference.

Competing against teams from around the world, Iaisha and her team worked over the course of three days to develop a proposal to address health disparaties by proposing a system that would help patients access culturally appropriate health care using a technology platform that would help match patients to the right providers.

Ms. Sadat and her team were honored on the main stage of Medicine X and gave a short presentation over the global Medicine X livestream which each year is the most-discussed health care conference in the world on social media.

Bassam Kadry, MD Stanford Clinical Associate Professor

Vivianne Tawfik, MD, PhD Stanford Assistant Professor

Vivianne Tawfik, MD, PhD is a board certified Anesthesiologist and Pain Medicine physician who specializes in the treatment of complex chronic pain disorders including chronic post-operative pain, complex regional pain syndrome and peripheral nerve injury.She obtained her MD and PhD in Neuroscience, with a focus on basic pain mechanisms, at Dartmouth Medical School before joining the Stanford Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative & Pain Medicine as an anesthesiology resident in the Fellowship in Anesthesia Research and Medicine (FARM) program, of which she now serves as the Assistant Director. After completion of her subspecialty fellowship training in Pain Medicine, Dr. Tawfik joined the faculty at Stanford and continues to research the immune contribution to persistent pain while treating patients suffering from chronic pain.

Larry Chu, MD, MS Stanford Professor of Anesthesiology

Larry Chu, MD is a Professor of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine and Director of the Stanford Anesthesia Informatics and Media (AIM) Lab. Dr. Chu founded the START online educational program as well as the Learnly online learning ecosystem for post-graduate anesthesiology education. He is an NIH-funded clinical researcher and is Executive Director of Stanford Medicine X, the world's most-discussed academic program on emerging technology and medicine. He also directs Medicine X | ED, a conference exploring the future of patient-centered medical education. He has written eight books, over 50 papers and over 50 book chapters in academic anesthesiology. He is a member of the editorial advisory board for The BMJ, one of the most influential general medical journals in the world.

Monika Wittig UC Denver, Assistant Professor, INWORKS

Monika is an Assistant Professor at Inworks, an innovation initiative at the University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus. Her role is multi-faceted-- focusing on instructional realms of Human Centered Design & 3D Prototyping, and is newly responsible for overseeing the development of Inworks’ mission on the Anschutz Medical Campus. Monika joins Inworks following years of travel directing workshops on digital design and fabrication as the director of LAN / Live Architecture Network. Monika holds a Postgraduate degree in 'Digital Architecture Production' from Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) in Barcelona. Her research at present focuses on forwarding increasingly accessible human health data as the next significant data set to drive architectural design processes. Since 2014, Monika has served as a program advisor for Stanford Medicine X.

Jack Andraka Stanford Undergraduate, inventor, researcher

Jack Andraka was just a fifteen year old Maryland high school sophomore when he invented an inexpensive early detection test for pancreatic, ovarian, and lung cancers. The Stanford undergraduate is now a researcher at the Clark center on campus studying nano robots and serves as one of the Stanford STM Summer Program's honored faculty.

Janak Chandrasoma, MD USC, Assistant Professor

Myriam Curet, MD Chief Medical Officer, Intuitive Surgical

Myriam J. Curet, M.D. joined Intuitive Surgical in December 2005 as Chief Medical Advisor. Dr. Curet was promoted to Executive Vice President, Chief Medical Officer, in November 2017. She served as Senior Vice President, Chief Medical Officer from February 2014. For more than 17 years, Dr. Curet has also held a faculty position at Stanford University School of Medicine, serving as a Clinical Professor of Surgery since October 2015 with a part-time clinical appointment at the Palo Alto Veteran's Administration Medical Center. Dr. Curet received her M.D. from Harvard Medical School and completed her general surgery residency program at the University of Chicago. She then worked for the Indian Health Service for four years before finishing her Surgical Endoscopy fellowship at the University of New Mexico. She was on the faculty at the University of New Mexico for six years prior to joining the Stanford University Department of Surgery in 2000.

Robert Dodd, MD, PhD Stanford Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery

Robert Dodd, MD, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at Stantord. Dr. Dodd is involved in clinical trials using endovascular coils that have a fiber coating that help heal aneurysms of the neck and can prevent an aneurysm from reforming. He uses minimally invasive endoscopic techniques to treat brain tumors.

Mary Hawn, MD Stanford Professor, Chair of Department of Surgery

Cindy Kin, MD Stanford Assistant Professor of Surgery

Cindy Kin is a Colon & Rectal Surgeon and Assistant Professor of Surgery at Stanford University Medical Center. She received her BA in Government from Harvard University and her MD from Columbia University. She completed her residency in General Surgery at Stanford, followed by a fellowship in Colorectal Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. She specializes in the surgical management of colorectal cancer, benign colorectal disorders, and inflammatory bowel disease. Her research interests include the assessment of surgical quality, and outcomes of colorectal surgery particularly in regards to colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. For her fellowship, Dr Kin will examine the impact of a surgical career on family commitments, and vice versa, as well as the effect of gender-specific mentors and role models in the field of surgery.

Yvonne (Bonnie) Maldonado, MD, FAAP, FPIDS, FIDSA Stanford Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Development and Diversity

Yvonne (Bonnie) A. Maldonado, MD, is Professor, Director of Global Child Health, Chief, Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Pediatrics, and Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Development and Diversity at Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, California. Dr. Maldonado attended Stanford University School of Medicine, completed a pediatric residency program and pediatric infectious diseases fellowship in the Department of Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University. She was an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, prior to joining the faculty at Stanford University. She has led several NIH, CDC, WHO and Gates funded domestic and international pediatric vaccine studies. Her research includes studies of the impact of rotavirus, measles and polio vaccines on the epidemiology and prevention of childhood infections in low resource populations, and in the prevention and treatment of perinatal HIV infection in the US, Mexico and Africa. She is currently the vice-chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Infectious Diseases, a member of the Board of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society and a member of the Board of Scientific Counselors for the Office of Infectious Diseases of the Centers for Disease Control. She has over 150 peer reviewed publications in scientific journals and is co-editor of the textbook “Infectious Diseases of the Fetus and Newborn Infant” and the American Academy of Pediatrics “Red Book”.

Lama Rimawi, MD Pediatrician

Deena Shakir Google Health Ventures, Partner

Deena manages partnerships for Google Venture's portfolio companies. She helps startups scale and grow by connecting them to the world’s largest companies.

Prior to joining GV, Deena spent five years at Google doing business development for early-stage products in health care, research and machine intelligence, and search. She also spearheaded social impact investments for Google.org.

Deena co-founded her first company at 19, and is an angel investor and startup adviser. She serves on the boards of TechWadi, the Harvard Alumni Association, the Project on Middle East Democracy, the Arab Film Festival, and the Asian University for Women. She is also an adviser to Girls Who Code.

Deena holds a joint Bachelor of Arts in social studies and Near Eastern languages and civilizations from Harvard College and a master’s degree from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service. She delivered the 2008 Harvard Class Day speech, “From Baghdad to Boston: Dropping the Global H-Bomb.”

Vanila Singh, MD Stanford Clinical Associate Professor

Vanila Singh is a Clinical Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at Stanford. She is the Chief Medical Officer to the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Health at the US Department of Health and Human Services, Washington DC. Singh was a former candidate for the United States House of Representatives in 2014.

Eila Skinner, MD Stanford Professor and Chair, Department of Urology

Dr. Skinner received her undergraduate degree in Human Biology from Stanford and MD from Keck USC Medical School. She completed a residency in Urology at LAC+USC Medical Center, and a fellowship in Urologic Oncology under Dr. Donald Skinner at the Norris Cancer Center at USC. She was on the faculty at USC from 1990 through 2012. She was recruited to Stanford University to become Chair of the Department of Urology in May 2012.

Dr. Skinner has received a number of awards including a Stop Cancer career development award, numerous teaching awards and listing in “Best Doctors” for over a decade. Her primary focus has been in the surgical treatment of locally advanced bladder cancer and is a nationally recognized expert in bladder reconstruction and continent urinary diversion. She has active ongoing clinical trials in the treatment of bladder cancer and other urologic malignancies.

Galym Imanbayev Stanford Medical Student

Galym is a medical student at Stanford University, passionate about the intersection of medicine and investment. Additionally, Galym serves as advisor on venture capital and investments to Stanford Medicine X. Prior to medical school, Galym was an investment professional at Capricorn Healthcare & Special Opportunities and a management consultant in PwC’s Health Industries Advisory group.

Galym received a BA in Economics from Stanford University, where he researched novel treatments in regenerative medicine in the Departments of Orthopedic Surgery and Bioengineering and published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Stem Cell & Development and Acta Biomaterialia.

Opportunity to observe clinical Anesthesia, Perioperative, and Pain medicine in a high-functioning hospital.

Open to junior and senior high-school and undergraduate college students (must be 16 years old at start of program). Students entering their junior year in Fall 2018 are eligible.
50 applicants will be accepted, 25 each for AM & PM sessions for each session.
