Neurosciences Institute programs advance neuroscience research through interdisciplinary research grants. We are deeply committed to the training of future generations of neuroscientists through our graduate fellowships and interdisciplinary scholar awards for postdocs. Our community gathers at our symposia, weekly seminars, and retreat to learn and disseminate the latest neuroscience research. Through everything we do, we are bringing together brilliant people from diverse disciplines to tackle the unanswered questions in neuroscience.
Big Ideas in Neuroscience
We ask our faculty to come together and dream big. Big Ideas in Neuroscience grants pave the way for larger teams of researchers to tackle fundamental problems in neuroscience. After our first round of Big Ideas, three outstanding teams are receiving 5 years of funding to tackle addiction, brain rejuvenation and interfacing with the brain. Stay tuned for a second Big Ideas competition scheduled to begin in early 2018.
Seed Grants
Stanford Neurosciences Institute awards seed grants to fund innovative, interdisciplinary research projects in the neurosciences. We seek focused, intense collaborations between 2-3 faculty members piloting a novel idea.
Interdisciplinary Scholar Awards
The Stanford Neurosciences Institute Interdisciplinary Scholar Awards provide funding to extraordinary postdoctoral scientists at Stanford University engaging in highly interdisciplinary research in the neurosciences broadly defined.
Interdisciplinary Graduate Fellowships
Stanford Interdisciplinary Graduate Fellowships affiliated with Stanford Neurosciences Institute provide current graduate students, whose research interests are in the interdisciplinary neurosciences, with three years of funding support. The Institute plans to grow our Interdisciplinary Graduate Fellowships Program to a total of 30 fellows over time.
Research Accelerator Projects
Research accelerator projects are driven by interdisciplinary teams of faculty making advancements in specific areas of neuroscience research.
Core Facilities
SNI and the School of Medicine together facilitate the efforts and productivity of a broad array of Neuroscientists by providing core facilities and services. These staffed facilities allow researchers to access tools, techniques and expertise that would be costly or impractical to replicate in individual laboratories. The Neuroscience Cores are supported in part by the NIH through a NINDS P30 Center Core Grant (Principal Investigator Gary Steinberg and Co-Principal Investigator Mehrdad Shamloo).
Seminar Series
The Stanford Neurosciences Institute Seminar Series sponsors leading scientists from across the globe presenting topics spanning the neurosciences arena, including cutting edge imaging, neuro-engineering, computational approaches, theory, translational neuroscience, human neuroscience and basic neurobiology.
Symposia
The Stanford Neurosciences Institute hosts an annual symposium to bring together researchers from a wide variety of disciplines and fields with a broad interest in neuroscience. Our speakers are world–renowned experts in basic science, translational neuroscience, human neuroscience and neuroscience policy.
Retreat
At our retreat, Stanford Neurosciences Institute enhances the interconnectedness of our community while we share our latest scientific questions and discoveries.
Art of Neuroscience
Art of Neuroscience is a campus-wide competition celebrating the aesthetics of neuroscience research broadly defined. This competition is aimed at exploring the interconnection of neuroscience and art.
EPFL-Stanford Exchange Program
Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and Stanford University seek applicants for short-term international research exchanges funded by Firmenich.
Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer Research Program
The Neurosciences Institute is one of the proud supporters of the Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer Research Program. SIMR is an eight-week program in which high school students from diverse backgrounds are invited to perform basic research with Stanford faculty, postdoctoral fellows, students and researchers on a medically-oriented project.
Stanford Program in Neuroscience and Society
The Stanford Neurosciences Institute is creating the Stanford Program in Neuroscience and Society (SPINS), a multidisciplinary initiative to study how neuroscience affects society, and to bring neuroscientists knowledge of human behavior and cognition from scholars in law, education and business. Through SPINS, SNI will create cooperative dialogue and partnership between these disciplines. After all, our nervous systems evolved to produce behavior, which neuroscience seeks to explain.
Sammy Kuo Awards in Neuroscience
In memory of Sammy Kuo, these awards are presented to the graduate student and postdoc authors of the best neuroscience papers published each year.
Visiting Scholar Awards
Recognizing that scholars visiting on sabbatical are a key opportunity for collaboration, the Institute offers a Visiting Scholar Award.
