Stories of Hope: The Women's Center

Tina’s Story from The Women's Center.

Tina was paroled to Artemis II from Bristol County House of Correction. After her parole ended, she stayed in shelter and worked the program through March 2011. Tina used the skills she had learned in the program to obtain two jobs while living in shelter, reunified with all three of her children with help from the Department of Child & Family (DCF), and moved into her own apartment in the Family Preservation Program, a housing program she accessed through High Point Treatment Center. She is currently co-facilitating an Anger Management Group at PAACA. She continues to maintain her sobriety, volunteer in the community, and keeps in contact with us.

After leaving the program, she sent the following note to Artemis II: “I want to say that I admire the women on your staff and I am grateful for the opportunity to have had them in my life. You have given me a chance to grow as a woman and be a better mother for my children. I am living my dream today and it is because of this program and the staff that didn’t give up on me. You are truly a blessing in my life. I will carry you with me each and every day. Thinking of you always, Tina.”

Diane B. Patrick, First Lady of Commonwealth, receives Advocate for Justice Award

On May 8th at the "It's Your Business Breakfast" to support Jane Doe Inc., The Kelly Timilty Advocate for Justice Award was wpresented to Diane B. Patrick, First Lady of Commonwealth, in recognition of all she has done to support survivors of sexual and domestic violence. Check out the event highlights and photos. 7th Annual Massachusetts White Ribbon Day a huge success

Over 450 men and boys converged on the State House in Boston for the 7th annual campaign event. Dr. Gary Gottlieb, CEO of Partners HealthCare, Pastor Ronald Odom, Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo and student performers from Phallacies at University of Massachusetts Amherst addressed the ways that men can - and are - making a difference in ending violence against women. New White House Task Force to Address Campus Sexual Violence

On January 22, 2014, President Obama signed an historic Presidential memorandum establishing the White House Task Force on Protecting Students from Sexual Assault. Over the next 90 days this inter-agency group will sift through the findings in the White House report, Rape and Sexual Assault: A Renewed Call to Action, and develop recommendations to address this scourge on campuses throughout the nation. As they proceed, JDI and our member rape crisis centers offer insights based on decades of activism and leadership in the anti-sexual violence movement.

JDI Launches LGBQ/T Campaign

Jane Doe Inc. in collaboration with our member program The Network/La Red has created the "I Want A World... Massachusetts" campaign to address sexual and domestic violence in the LGBQ/T (lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer and transgender) communities.

What kind of world do you envision?

Get ready to share your vision through video, art, music, and poetry. On June 24, 2014, JDI will launch a new website dedicated to this campaign. FY2015 Budget Advocacy results in modest improvements

Thanks to your support and the advocacy of our member programs, the FY2015 budget proposal passed by the Massachusetts House of Representatives and Senate will likely include modest increases in some ares. Please take a moment to thank your Representative and Senator for their role in ensuring critical services to victims will be preserved. For details on the house proposal, click here.

Sexual and Domestic Violence in Rural Communities

Economic security is a central issue for survivors of sexual and domestic violence. Check out the resoruces from the "Advancing the Economic Security of Survivors of Domestic and Sexual Violence Summit" cosponsored by JDI and the Massachusetts Rural Domestic and Sexual Violence Project along with our members from Elizabeth Freeman Center, NELCWIT, and the Center for Women and Community of the University of Massachusetts. JDI member programs Safe Passage, YWCA of Central Massachusetts, HarborCOV, and DOVE also participated.

The photos capture the postive energy for creating new collaborations and finding new solutions to address the needs of survivors in rural communities. The story also captured the attention of the media.
