The Human Intelligence (HUMINT) Career Field represents DIA’s ability to execute its national security mission through providing actionable intelligence to warfighters working on the front lines of the nation’s defenses. Officers in the HUMINT Career Field perform a wide variety of functions to execute and support the mission, including overt and clandestine collection of intelligence across a spectrum of sources and methods, management of the collection and reporting cycle, and direct intelligence support to collectors and collection operations as members of the following career specialties: clandestine collection, overt collection and operations support.
Officers in this specialty operate globally to plan and conduct clandestine HUMINT collection, and report on intelligence information obtained from human sources to satisfy priorities at the national, combatant command (CCMD) and Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) levels. These officers gain expertise in foreign cultures and languages to accomplish their mission while acquiring the skills and technical ability to manage sources who have access to privileged information vital to the Department of Defense (DoD) and national security decision makers. Service in this specialty requires sound judgment, highly developed interpersonal skills, and the ability to manage projects from the field and headquarters perspective.
These officers acquire information without concealment through legal and open means such as observation, elicitation, interrogation, intelligence exchange, liaison activities or military source operations. Overt collectors conduct worldwide HUMINT operations to satisfy priorities at the national, CCMD and OSD levels, as well as enable other HUMINT collection specialties. Specific roles in this specialty include debriefers, interrogators, defense
liaison officers and field collection officers.
DIA relies on these Officers to manage, guide, and oversee HUMINT operations conducted by overt and clandestine HUMINT Officers. They do this by generating the collection platforms’ operating directives, focusing collection efforts, and enabling collectors’ responsiveness to DoD and national security information requirements. These Officers also ensure the production of quality reporting and collaborate across the intelligence community to increase their target knowledge to effectively focus and oversee HUMINT Operations. Specific roles in this specialty include Operations Support Officer, Collection Management Officer, and HUMINT Targeting Officer.
