To commemorate Memorial Day 2018, we honor our fallen colleagues who made the ultimate sacrifice from 1970-2004 with our Patriots Memorial Week. As the 2000’s progressed “the.com” bubble burst, the world experienced several natural disasters from the tsunami in South-East Asia to Hurricane Katrina. Reality TV, music sharing and the increased presence of the internet in daily life shaped the decade. Popular books became blockbuster movies, such as Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. Ironically by the end of the decade, Blockbuster Video stores were no longer popular. In 2008 Barack Obama became the first African American elected president of the United States. In 2004, DIA lost four colleagues who were killed in the line of duty while providing security to the DIA-led Iraq Survey group. As we continue to commemorate Memorial Day 2018 and honor our fallen colleagues who made the ultimate sacrifice from 1970-2004, we take a look back at 9/11. On September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked four U.S. airplanes crashing them into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the Pennsylvania countryside. The terrorist attacks on America united the nation to defeat terrorism and started U.S. military operations in Afghanistan. Seven DIA employees working in the Office of the DIA Comptroller at the Pentagon were killed during the 9/11 attack.

To commemorate Memorial Day 2018, we honor our fallen colleagues who made the ultimate sacrifice from 1970-2004 with our Patriots Memorial. The 90s were a decade of popular culture and growth for America, with the help of the internet the economy was booming. Operation Desert Storm liberated Kuwait and the internet search engine, Google was founded. Nelson Mandela was elected as the President of South Africa. From 1996 to 2000 DIA lost three Defense Attachés through random acts of violence and terrorism in Egypt, Kenya, and Niger.

To commemorate Memorial Day 2018, we honor our fallen colleagues who made the ultimate sacrifice from 1970-2004 with our Patriots Memorial. In the 1980’s, Americans embraced the Morning in America Again movement that ushered Ronald Reagan into the White House. The threat of communism loomed throughout much of the decade but came to an end in 1989, when the Berlin Wall was torn down, ending the Cold War. Motorola introduced the first mobile phone, John Lennon was murdered, and the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after launch. These events make the 80’s remembered for its consumerism and materialism. From 1982 to 1988, DIA lost five Defense Attachés to terrorist incidents in Greece, Paris, Guatemala, and the attack on the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon.

To commemorate Memorial Day 2018, we honor our fallen colleagues who made the ultimate sacrifice from 1970-2004 with our Patriots Memorial. The 1970’s was a turbulent time with the fight for equality, high inflation and oil embargo, the war in Vietnam, the Watergate scandal, and the breakup of the Beatles. Amidst the doom and gloom there was also good news. NASA’s Apollo13 Moon Mission returned to earth safely, the Walt Disney World Resort opened in Florida, and Microsoft and the Apple computer companies were created. Unfortunately, DIA tragically lost six employees, all of whom worked for the Defense Attaché Service. One served as an assistant Army attaché in Jordan, while the others supported Operation Babylift in the closing days of the Vietnam War.
